June 18-23, 2007

The team focused on the delivery of health care in the Central Region in the parishes of Davyton United Church, Nazareth Moravian Church, and Frankfield Methodist Church.

The team saw 1,330 patients of which 664 received medical care, 491 received vision care, and 175 for dental care.  Thirty-one cases were referred for specialist treatment.

Among the cases referred for follow up was that of a 45-year old woman with chronic blood in her urine (hematuria) for the past three months.  Since being treated by the team members, the condition has cleared.  An ultrasound did not show any abnormality.  She had high praises for the team.

CASES

The most prevalent cases treated were illnesses of diabetes and hypertension, followed by skin conditions and anemia.

Hypertension:
High readings of hypertension included 243/108, 220/104, 200/106, 190/110, 214/118, 200/120, and 180/90.

Diabetes:
High blood sugar readings included: 600 mg/dl, 521 mg/dl, 496 mg/dl, and 476 mg/dl.  Patients were given glucometers and diet education.

Vision:
Cataracts and cases of poor vision were common.  Many cases of the cataracts were referred for further treatment.

Dental:
Mostly extractions and some denture repairs.

EVALUATION

Investigations proved that many patients were out of medications or could only manage to purchase partial medications due to poor economic situations. Some were unaware that being registered with the government's National Health Fund (NHF) allowed them to purchase medications at a lower cost.

Patients openly expressed thanks and appreciation. Clients that received dental care were extremely grateful as their economic situation prevented them from maintaining good dental care.
